3D Printing reduces tooling costs by 10000%

Looking for multiples of the same part but don't want to spend ££££ on an hard cnc tool or silicon tool. 3DPrinting at Magicmodel is an excellent solution to small batch runs of 100 and less.

Edinburgh 3dprinting group

Looking forward to demystifying for creative individuals with today 4pm. It will be interesting to see how many industrial designers turn up that are completely new to 3dprinting.

Edinburgh should be buzzing as the festival is in full swing so I expect it should be a full house.
Maybe one day Edinburgh3dprintinggroup will have a stand at TCT Live.

Ladybird school project for Daughter (happy fathers day)

My beautiful, but annoying daughter kept pulling my arm to get this ladybird modelled and printed for her all important school project. After a few hours of research and several mouse clicks later we had something to hold in our hands. Happy Fathers Day.

3DPrinted map of United Kingdom

After scouring the web for a nice displacement map of the UK I finally decided it was time to put the Orcabot to the test with some challenging contours. Using a bit of CAD wizardry I got an STL file with a little help from Rhino3d. So far so good.
After re-sizing for the bed and slicing on a 0.25mm layer SOLID I played the 3dprint.
And here is the result:

3DPrint_UK_Magicmodel1

Now you can see just how useful a real object like this map would be for travelers, mountain climbers search and rescue. Potentially one could cut a portion of the relief bump map and scale it up then 3dprint a larger one. Here is another photo of the outline of the 3DPrintUK doing England.

Architectural MDF 3dprint combined

Just to show how versatile Magicmodel is with their projects we have just successfully completed a scale model of an architectural building.

The basic block shapes did not lend themselves to 3dprinting so they were made using good old fashioned   mdf or medium density fibreboard.

Lots of blood sweat and tears went into this model........but it was worth it to see such a great clean result.

Airfix 3DPrint

This 3DPrint was one of my early designs which I reverse engineered from a wooden version of the same toy design I got from a kinder surprise egg.

UK Furniture Design

More work from some amazing students in Birmingham who have been frantically rendering away some virtual prototypes. With the help of Magicmodel to bring them to life.
The prototype scale model was carefully prepared for the 3dprinter and thickness of skin was optimised to give the best fit for sliding drawers etc.

Also it's the first time that Magicmodel has used 3 different colour materials for the same product. It came out really effective and sharp. Customer was delighted with the result :-)

UK Product Design

As the year of 3dprinting really takes off with lots of 'off the shelf' printers becoming more widely available I thought I would maintain my loyalty with Mendelparts as my original Orcabot has been like a workhorse.
Any way here is an example of some of the 3dprints I have been doing for students of industrial design recently.

A great example of a simple yet elegant design for a cheesegrater with collecting bucket. The London design student opted to hand/sand finish her own work, and I am sure she did it justice.

3dprinting Monster High Doll Head

After digitally sculpting this Monster High dolls head I just could not resist putting her through my 3dprinter.
It's a bit like in the movie Wierd Science except Kelly Le Brock did not enter my room....to my disapointment!

TRY THIS ITS EVEN MORE AMAZING!!!! AND FREEE

Creo Elements/Direct Modeling Express 4.0

After using this free software for over a month now I am completely converted to parametric 3d cad modelling.

Its brilliant for engineers and mechanical engineering students who want to get into the world of rapid prototyping and 3dprinting because you can actually import an iges or step file and convert it to STL ready for 3dprinting.

How Wonderful!!!
What a superb gift..............thank you PTC.

Spread the word about this software. It is the best free software on the market for doing blends. Unlike some cad packages which get themselves tied in knots when trying to make a tricky blend.

Download it now. You will not regret it.
Once you have made your model and saved it as a high res stl then send it to www.magicmodel.co.uk to have it made real.

Sumpod Delta stepper motor problemo

Just getting to the stage in the assembly I hate most......electronics.
I rigged up what I thought was correct and then surprise surprise no movement in the stepper motors.
All I want is for them to move up so I can assemble it easier. But I guess it will need to work at some stage.

After rigging up the following:
I then opened up Pronterface, hit the connect button and got this:
Looks promising you might think, NO. When I pressed the 1mm button for all axis not a sausage of movement happened.
Going onto the reprap forum to see if any of the gurus of electronica knows.
Fingers crossed.

Orcabot is back in town!!!!!!!

My trusty Orcabot had an inrtermittent problem with the bed heater and resulted in stopped builds.
I've since discover what it was:
Explanation below:

Decided to turn Orcabot onto it's belly (which was tricky and I thought it might have bit me!)
only to discover that the thick yellow wire of the heater held in by the Nylon grommet thingy was a bit bent and dark. This could mean only one thing.

I split open the pvc uncovering the exposed broken wire.
How could it have broken such a thick wire?
I know.....wear and tear it's called!
Bed moving backwards and forwards millions of times did it.

Rapidbot extruding fillament with bubbles in.

My new Rapidbot 3.0 is not extruding well.
As you can see from the picture it is coming out the hotend with bubbles in it.

Now I have read somewhere that it might be something to do with moisture in the air and filament getting too humid, but I have tried the same reel in my Orcabot and it works fine.

Anyway, going to post on Reprap forum to see if any one else has experienced the same effect.

In the out of focus video you can still see the offending air bubbles. Can I get a fix please?

Calling all product designers

Magicmodel can help new product designers using google sketchup.

Gopro webcam brackets custom made can be 3DPrinted to a good accuracy for a reasonable price.

What makes these custom designed products even better is that they are 3D Printed using the actual strong industrial plastic that commercial products are injection moulded from.

Classic renaissance sculpture

A 3D Artist from California named David Foster is helping to reduce the cost of 3DPrinting. Magicmodel successfully managed to achieve a new layer resolution of 0.1mm with the new silver material.

I'm sure you will agree that the results were quite impressive, but most of that is due to the wonderfully proportioned sculpt of the classic female nude. Check out the pictures below.

The model stands at 8 inches tall from the base and is the tallest build achieved on the Orca with a hexagonal internal structure to make the part really strong.

I just wish I could get down to the 3DPrintshow2012 this weekend but I'm working....doh!
