Will 3DHubs be the new Ebay of 3DPrinting?

Recently we have been considering outsourcing some of our work to the all new and ever expanding @3DHubs community, with mixed results. The prices listed for each hub vary greatly so in order to minimise the collateral damage we decided to opt for the less expensive hubs just as an experiment on some jobs that were not live.
We tried hubs in #Birmingham, #Sheffield, #Manchester and #London. The part we chose to have printed was the benchyboat from @Thingiverse , however it proved a more interesting test to also use this experiment to evaluate some alternative materials other than traditional PLA. So we opted for ABS, PETG, and Carbon filaments.
Stay tuned for the next post when the results will be in and the votes counted……..

Rapid prototyping and 3dprinting with two colours

I just purchased a dual extruder 3dprinter so I was wondering what wonderful creations I would be able to dream up. After toying with a combination of #Meshlab, #Meshmixer, #Thingiverse and #replicatorg I finally came up with these two marvellous creations. #marvell

Just wanted to share these #beautifuldesign with you all

3d printing in Formula 1

Once upon a time an F1 car was made using hand crafted tools shaping metals and cutting and tapping and boring. You needed a lot of patience to work this way where parts came out precise and accurate. Perfected.
These days Formula 1 cars rely heavily on cad cam and rapid prototyping otherwise known as 3d printing. Car designers have these fantastic machines at there disposal and still they cant seem to make the parts fast enough for the hundreds of iterations of a design for a single part.

There is definately a limit to layer object manufacturing and it looks like that may be reached sooner than expected.

Magicmodel Small batch production and low volume manufacturing

Minimise transport costs by using uk suppliers
When it comes to manufacturing the far east has dominated and to some extent still does. But things are changing for the better. No longer will small manufacturers into research and development need to source their components from china and Taiwan etc. parts can now be bought at much less cost from uk3dprinting firms such as magicmodel who are specialising in producing and manufacturing small batches of hard plastic parts. Obviously accuracy is never going to match that of a precision cnc or injection molded part but it is a great accessible solution for proof of concept. At magicmodel we encourage our customers to try one before  committing to a small batch of say 50-100. This way our customer is able to test their design with very little to no collateral damage.

STL_File_Generation

Having trouble creating a good resolution STL file for print?
Don’t worry we are here to help. With 15 years of experience in this field there is no excuse for a badly faceted STL file, therefore you get the highest quality part.
IGES TO STL STL File Generation news
We use Netfabb Studio to repair our STL files.
If you need to send a large STL then please zip it up using winrar or winzip.
Because with 3D Printing “What you see is what you get”, and if you see a rough file on the screen, then that’s exactly how it will come out in the printer.
STP TO STL STL File Generation news
One golden rule about exporting STL for e-mail is that you do it in BINARY format and NOT ACSII. The reason for this is that ascii format is like text and creates a much larger STL file.
Future website updates will cover all aspects of exporting STL files from various software CAD packages……so stay tuned for all those great tips.
Computer games is also an area where we can excell and bring you’re avatar or personalised character to life as a real 3D model sitting on you’re desk.

character_high-resolution-3dprint

High res versus low res
Magicmodel 3dprinters are capable of producing parts in 2 resolutions. If you require a quick turnaround and
your part is quite big ie 150mm x 150mm x 150mm say then you ought to opt for the low resolution at 0.25mm per
layer. This is pretty much the default for most fdm based machines as it gives a good balance between quality
and speed. Both resolutions allow for 0% – 100% infill which can also help speed things up whilst preserving
the strength of your part or model.

3D Printing reduces tooling costs by 10000%

Looking for multiples of the same part but don't want to spend ££££ on an hard cnc tool or silicon tool. 3DPrinting at Magicmodel is an excellent solution to small batch runs of 100 and less.

Edinburgh 3dprinting group

Looking forward to demystifying for creative individuals with today 4pm. It will be interesting to see how many industrial designers turn up that are completely new to 3dprinting.

Edinburgh should be buzzing as the festival is in full swing so I expect it should be a full house.
Maybe one day Edinburgh3dprintinggroup will have a stand at TCT Live.

Ladybird school project for Daughter (happy fathers day)

My beautiful, but annoying daughter kept pulling my arm to get this ladybird modelled and printed for her all important school project. After a few hours of research and several mouse clicks later we had something to hold in our hands. Happy Fathers Day.

3DPrinted map of United Kingdom

After scouring the web for a nice displacement map of the UK I finally decided it was time to put the Orcabot to the test with some challenging contours. Using a bit of CAD wizardry I got an STL file with a little help from Rhino3d. So far so good.
After re-sizing for the bed and slicing on a 0.25mm layer SOLID I played the 3dprint.
And here is the result:

3DPrint_UK_Magicmodel1

Now you can see just how useful a real object like this map would be for travelers, mountain climbers search and rescue. Potentially one could cut a portion of the relief bump map and scale it up then 3dprint a larger one. Here is another photo of the outline of the 3DPrintUK doing England.

Architectural MDF 3dprint combined

Just to show how versatile Magicmodel is with their projects we have just successfully completed a scale model of an architectural building.

The basic block shapes did not lend themselves to 3dprinting so they were made using good old fashioned   mdf or medium density fibreboard.

Lots of blood sweat and tears went into this model........but it was worth it to see such a great clean result.

Airfix 3DPrint

This 3DPrint was one of my early designs which I reverse engineered from a wooden version of the same toy design I got from a kinder surprise egg.

UK Furniture Design

More work from some amazing students in Birmingham who have been frantically rendering away some virtual prototypes. With the help of Magicmodel to bring them to life.
The prototype scale model was carefully prepared for the 3dprinter and thickness of skin was optimised to give the best fit for sliding drawers etc.

Also it's the first time that Magicmodel has used 3 different colour materials for the same product. It came out really effective and sharp. Customer was delighted with the result :-)

UK Product Design

As the year of 3dprinting really takes off with lots of 'off the shelf' printers becoming more widely available I thought I would maintain my loyalty with Mendelparts as my original Orcabot has been like a workhorse.
Any way here is an example of some of the 3dprints I have been doing for students of industrial design recently.

A great example of a simple yet elegant design for a cheesegrater with collecting bucket. The London design student opted to hand/sand finish her own work, and I am sure she did it justice.

3dprinting Monster High Doll Head

After digitally sculpting this Monster High dolls head I just could not resist putting her through my 3dprinter.
It's a bit like in the movie Wierd Science except Kelly Le Brock did not enter my room....to my disapointment!

TRY THIS ITS EVEN MORE AMAZING!!!! AND FREEE

Creo Elements/Direct Modeling Express 4.0

After using this free software for over a month now I am completely converted to parametric 3d cad modelling.

Its brilliant for engineers and mechanical engineering students who want to get into the world of rapid prototyping and 3dprinting because you can actually import an iges or step file and convert it to STL ready for 3dprinting.

How Wonderful!!!
What a superb gift..............thank you PTC.

Spread the word about this software. It is the best free software on the market for doing blends. Unlike some cad packages which get themselves tied in knots when trying to make a tricky blend.

Download it now. You will not regret it.
Once you have made your model and saved it as a high res stl then send it to www.magicmodel.co.uk to have it made real.

Sumpod Delta stepper motor problemo

Just getting to the stage in the assembly I hate most......electronics.
I rigged up what I thought was correct and then surprise surprise no movement in the stepper motors.
All I want is for them to move up so I can assemble it easier. But I guess it will need to work at some stage.

After rigging up the following:
I then opened up Pronterface, hit the connect button and got this:
Looks promising you might think, NO. When I pressed the 1mm button for all axis not a sausage of movement happened.
Going onto the reprap forum to see if any of the gurus of electronica knows.
Fingers crossed.
